Choral Chameleon Chorus

Our semi-professional chorus of 50+ voices meets weekly in Manhattan, with the Ensemble at its core. Bringing together both seasoned professional singers and experienced avocational singers, the Chorus welcomes new music, genres, and approaches that advance choral music and address the unique expressions of music in the world. Choral Chameleon’s Chorus was named a 2nd Place winner of The American Prize: celebrating American excellence in the arts in Choral Performance, Community Chorus Division, 2018-19.

In 2019, the Chorus recorded their first album with the premier of 'Goshu Ondo Suite' on Aum Fidelity label.  Their second album, 'Deus Ex Machina' of contemporary works for choir and organ by Rex Isenberg and Dale Trumbore.

During the 2020 pandemic year, undeterred, the Chorus went into the studio in groups of four and recorded the album Woven during a time when society had halted.

Our energized and enjoyable Monday night rehearsals embrace development in vocal technique, music literacy, and concert repertoire in a practical and accessible manner.

In keeping with our stated actions to address systemic inequality in the concert music world, we have assembled a team of diverse backgrounds from within our membership to examine and update our process. For your audition, you will submit answers to a series of basic contact and musical experience questions via the form linked below on this page. You will record yourself singing 2 of 3 excerpts provided and upload your recordings. Please note that your audition will be adjudicated solely on the answers to these questions and on your recordings.

Adjudicators WILL NOT receive your name or any other identifying information.

What it's like to sing with us:

Expect to perform in 2 to 3 self-produced concert cycles in both Manhattan and Brooklyn during any given season. Performance venue locations & types vary according to the concert concept.

Pedagogy is a core part of the Choral Chameleon ethos: The Chorus is expected to participate in the Choral Chameleon Summer Institute at the end of June, as the lab choir for the conducting track, for which there is also a 5-6 week rehearsal period after our last concert cycle, during which the Chorus is given training in providing constructive feedback for conductors. The Institute involves an intensive commitment of weekend and evening rehearsals during one week, culminating with performance in the public Summer Institute concert on the Friday.

Our singers also frequently accept invitations to perform in 3rd party theatrical or interdisciplinary productions in New York, often with minimal rehearsal time. We're looking for singers of all ages and musical backgrounds who are open to doing just about anything and who can be confident readers and performers without extensive coaching. Choral Chameleon is one of the best choirs to join in New York City for adult avocational singers who want to stretch as performers and musicians!

We have begun to record some of our projects. These projects are recorded on separate days to performances.

What the 2022-2023 Season will look like:

-Weekend residential retreat - Friday, October 14th (eve) to Sunday October 16th (noon)
    -“Ofrendas” - Fall Project - October / November 2022
    -“15th Anniversary Celebration” - Spring Project - April 2023
-Institute Concert and Coaching of Conductors - Last week in June, 2023

What to expect at a Choral Chameleon Chorus audition:

We will do a brief interview, test your vocal range, check your sight singing, and hear a prepared choral excerpt (we will provide in advance) and a prepared solo of your choosing. Please bring your sheet music in the correct key. We are looking for a high level of music reading ability.
